Horticultural manufacturers are being encouraged to contribute to the development of high-tech mapping equipment.
The National Protected Crop Map covers businesses, polythene, shaded houses, glass houses and permanent networks throughout Australia.
R&D Hort Innovation Head Bureau de Coke said there is currently no comprehensive national crop map.
He said the new initiative will greatly help industries improve biological preparedness and natural disaster response efforts.
“The knowledge gap of most Australian agricultural industries is a lack of understanding of the distribution and environment of private crops,” he said.
The national conservation crop map is said to help farmers with production planning.
Knowing where crops are located, establishing isolation zones and coordinating land surveillance and improving response to improve bio-safety invasions, including the environment of crops affected by natural disasters.
The map, which is being developed with the support of crop crops Australia, Future Food Systems CRCC and Greater Sydney and North Coast Local Services, is said to be helping farmers with production planning.
Expected crop Australia vice-chairman Matthew Plunett’s lack of accurate production can lead to very inaccurate pre-harvest forecasts, leading to poor sales forecasts both at home and abroad.
Mr Plunkett said: “The identification of specific agricultural systems also provides important information on value chains, tracking, transportation and market access.”

According to Andrew Robson, project manager at the University of New England, the same equipment already developed with Hort Innovation at the UNA Agricultural Remote Control Center has been used in many tree-growing industries, providing a useful basis for this protected pruning map.
“This map – developed by a combination of industry data integration, image analysis, landscaping and civics science – meets the requirements of the Australian map, is available free of charge and respects the privacy of farmers without including any private producer or crop information,” said Professor Robson.
This exciting outcome and collaboration will elevate Australian vegetables as the new global leadership.
According to David Ire, General Manager of Future Food Systems, the strategic initiative will greatly increase industry awareness, current product scope and design, and future opportunities.
Protected crop maps are available on desktop or mobile. The draft map is scheduled to be completed by 2023. However, users can visit the protected crop systems survey site at any time.
