FARGO – When you visit one of the eight growing community gardens in Fargo, it’s easy to see why this has turned into a center of friendship between potatoes, peppers and eggplant.
It was Jack’s 15th year that helped him start gardening as a way to welcome new Americans to Fargo-Moorhead.
“I have only retired for two years and it will be easier to go to the tropics and visit the lakes, but this is my passion and it is good to work with people who love gardening,” he said.
Recipients also say that volunteers should plant and care for their entire garden during the summer.
Whether they are from Bhutan or Fargo, the beauty of the garden has melted.
“We’re all here for a variety of reasons, but it’s about getting to know the community and getting to know each other,” said gardener Joan Bishoff.
“I joined the gardens because I wanted to learn about different types of farming and different cultures, and how to cook, and so on,” said volunteer Mary Ann Phillips.
The harvest is huge, and families who take vegetables home sometimes share them with homeless shelters.
“(Our) volunteers invite people to teach them how to keep food, because these gardeners bring home 20 pounds of food today,” he said. “Which are more vegetables, so they have to keep their food to survive the winter.”
That’s why the Paris-based RCA-TV chose Jack as the recipient of the magic hero. A filmmaker follows him and the growing community gardens, harvesting vegetables and placing Fargo-Moorhead on a map to promote the beauty of a community.
Woods says the money he received from the RCA award will be used to grow another community community garden in Fargo.
