Jean-Elizabeth Shimunek (Ni Marsh) died on the morning of May 27, 2022, at the hands of her beloved husband, Rick. Her unexpected battle with cancer took her by surprise. Jenny was born on June 22, 1948, in Alton, Bartlett, and Royal Marsh. In addition to her college years, she lived all her life in Alton and Godfrey. Jenny and Rick fulfilled their dream of building a home on the farm of her maternal grandparents Charles and Elizabeth Bartlett. Living on this beautiful property brought joy to Jenny and a spiritual connection to her heritage. She values family history and her recent study of genealogy by her maternal and paternal grandparents led her to join the American Revolutionary Daughters (DAR).
Jenny had a deep love for nature. Like her father, Roy, and her husband, Rick, she lived a simple, easy life on earth. Jenny loved to walk and walk around the plains and forests around her home. In an effort to encourage this important ecological activity, she and Rick decided to turn their fields into flower gardens.
Jenny, an avid gardener, grew many plants and vegetables. If you visit her at home during the growing season, you may be able to bring a bouquet of flowers or plants, a variety of vegetables, and even a houseplant.
After earning her master’s degree in library science some 20 years ago, Jenny became a reference director at Heiner Public Library. She loved her work and her creative ability to express and share it with the community. She earned a bachelor’s degree in jewelry horticulture from the University of Illinois. In the library, Jeanny created countless rooms for customers, from pizza gardening to seed and plant sharing to the latest hiking book club, which she unfortunately could not manage. Jenny loved to learn and her spirit led her to share her knowledge of the beauty of the earth with others.
Jean leaves a family that cherishes her memories and longs for them.
Soul has been with her husband Rick for 50 years, a loving mother to Andrew (Oumaa) and Thomas Shimunek, grandparents of William Shimonik, Winnie (Larry) Striker’s dear sister, Steve (Marseille), Sarah (Tim) Waterlu, a loving 11-year-old sister and nephew, Her 18-year-old aunt, Lily Jean-Waterloo, is a newborn baby.
