Local events commemorate those who fell on this weekend

Memorial Day weekend offers many local opportunities to commemorate the special day of service for women and men killed in American wars. The celebration was originally known as Decor Day. It was founded after the Civil War and is the ancient tradition of decorating tombs with flowers, garlands, and flags.

Memorial race, concert on Sunday

Sunday 11th Annual Clovis Memorial Run It invites all athletic and adult athletes to participate in a variety of athletic and recreational activities. The event, hosted by Clovis Senior Center, “honors our military servicemen and women who have made great sacrifices to protect our freedom,” says the race website.

Events include a scheduled 5km walk or walk, a half-mile race and a half-mile “high walk and roll”. For details, visit www.clovismemorialrun.com


Also on Sunday, the Fresno Community Concert Band In the northeast of Fresno, Shagoyan Hall hosts a program called “American Fairy Tale.” The 3 p.m. concert will be celebrated with respectful and patriotic music ranging from “Navy Song” to “Lark or Eagle Never”.

Special guest musician John Barcelona will be the sole performer for the band “American Flute”. Barcelona is a Flute Emeritus professor at CSU Long Beach. More information at www.fresnocommunityband.org

Monday Memorial Events

Monday’s events begin at half an hour Memorial Day Sunrise Service The program will be held at Woodward Park in Fresno from 5 30 30 a.m. at the park’s Audubon Gate and will include speakers, music and tapes.

The service is hosted by Vietnamese veterans in the Fresno chapter.


Of Central California Japanese American League Hosts Memorial Day Service at 9:00 a.m. Rode Park will honor more than 3,000 Japanese-American men and women who served in the U.S. Army in Central California, including 29 Japanese soldiers.

The program included the laying of wreaths at the park’s Nissay War, gun salutes and a speech by Akiko Miyake-Stone, pastor of the United Christian Church of Japan.


After a while, Fresno Memorial Gardens The memorial service will be held at 115 S. Cornelia Ave. Singer Cemetery is located at 568 S. Rainbow Ave.


Of Clovis Veterans Memorial District Hosts a series of memorabilia throughout the day, including patriotic documentary films, live music, databases and lunch parties. Programs will begin at 9 a.m. and will continue until 2 p.m. at the Rex Fabus Memorial Building at 808 4th St.

As well as on holiday weekends, St. Agnes Medical Center On the front lawn of the hospital will be a memorial service for ministers and women who waved hundreds of American flags. The hospital launched its flag display culture in 2019 on Patriots Day and has expanded into Memorial Day in recent years.
