Montreal wants to block many single-plastics, many pesticides

Montreal: The city of Montreal is looking to block more single plastics and more pesticides by March 2023 and more plastic bags by December 2022.

Planned by the administration on Wednesday called for a change.

Prohibited pesticides include glyphosate, chlorpyrifos and certain neonicotinoids.

“The harmful effects of pesticides on health are growing,” said Mayor Valerie Planet. Doctors and scientists have alerted people to the impact on people and the environment, and action is needed.

Montreal is the first municipality in Canada to ban these pesticides for domestic use. The forest bans about 100 pesticides in agriculture, ornamental gardening, and extinction.

The new law requires businesses to submit an annual license or use a $ 4,000 fine.

“We are balancing the health, environment and biodiversity of the people of Montreal by banning the use of highly toxic pesticides such as glyphosate and neonicotinoids, which are harmful to health and biodiversity,” Montreal County said. Laurence Lavin Lalonde.

Plastic suspension

According to the mayor’s plan, plastic straw is still sold in stores, but not in restaurants. Plastic containers, along with some drinking glasses and food containers, are also planned to be banned.

Other single-plastic items sold in stores are safe, including fruit and vegetable bags.

Businesses that do not comply with the rules may be fined $ 400 to $ 4,000.
