The Ooty Flower Show is an annual event held at the famous botanical garden that attracts millions of tourists and travel partners. More than thirty flowers, often referred to as the ‘South Show’, and beautiful handicrafts are set up to entertain visitors. Interestingly, the park was home to the Todar community in the beautiful valley in the Nilgiri district.
The first edition of the Flower Exhibition was inaugurated in 1896 by J.H. Tremnerher, Chairman of the Agricultural Community. Planted for recreation by colonial officials, small gardens were also used for farming. Gradually, the garden became one of the main attractions of Nilgris. The flower show takes place every year in May, in the bright colors of summer.
The opening edition of the Flower Show was held in 1896. A.D. The government of Tamil Nadu took over the annual event in 1980 and has since been jointly organized by the Tourism and Fruit and Plantation Departments. The month-long festival kicks off – the Kotagiri Garden Show.
A photo exhibition, a spice show, a rose show, a boat and fruit show are also part of the sprawling festival. Cultural costume exhibitions and indigenous tribes are special attractions of cultural programs such as Ayr, Kedar and Todar. The flower show was canceled only once, years ago when Tamil Nadu stalled due to a strike.
A feast for the eyes
This year, about 150 workers have been hired for flower arrangements at the Botanical Garden. Seedlings sown in November last year will bloom in April and May this year. More than 100 workers have been caring for plants and flowers for five months. Workers are assigned tasks such as soil care, weeding, and watering. This year, visitors can see beautiful flowers such as dahlias, millennium, salsa flowers, geranium, spatial plants and petunia. As part of the flower show, some 35,000 flower arrangements have been made.
More than five and a half plants, 217 species, paint the park in many colors. The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, designed with more than a thousand roses, is the highlight of this year’s festival. The workers are busy preparing and caring for the flowers. Flowers came from Bengalru to decorate designer sculptures. Founded in Bengalru, a thirty-member professional team, the flower show builds some of the most beautiful floral motifs.
OT @ 200
On the occasion of Otiy’s 200th birthday, ‘Ooty 200’ was erected at the flower shop to commemorate the great heritage of the ancient city. John Sullivan, former chairman of Coimbatore, is the founder of modern OT. Nilgris, formerly of the Gangan dynasty, was later defeated by the kings of Hoissala and Vishnu Vardana.
This mountainous area was home to indigenous ethnic groups such as the Toda, Irrular, Kota, Kurumba, and Badagas. For some time, OT was under the control of the famous Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan. This typical city continues to delight travelers with its amazing cultural and cultural heritage. Rainfall in Ooty, which is rumored in many places, has dropped to 11 degrees Fahrenheit[11 ° C]. Meanwhile, the organizers of the flower show are worried that declining temperatures and rain will weaken the spirit of the mega-event. But last weekend, more than 20,000 visitors came to the flower garden to enjoy the flower show.
Visitors from Kerala
Flowering arrangements usually begin in November-December. Seeds and seedlings in a vegetable garden are transferred to new pots. More than 150 workers are employed to care for the plants until they grow and bloom. Surprisingly, most of the labor force here is women. They start work in the morning and continue until 5pm. CA Mary Vineetha, a native of Kochi, is the superintendent of a glass house, one of the most spectacular attractions in the garden.
Vineta has been working in the orchards in OT for over 25 years. There is another woman from the valley. Vineta says many Keralites work in different parts of the garden. Before planting the sprouts, the pots are filled with a mixture of Elamana soil, clay, and flour. These soils are mostly harvested from forest regions. The plants are watered at least once a day. However, the plants need to be watered only on alternate days if it rains. They are fed with the right amount of organic fertilizer. Vineta says the staff love plants just like they care for their children. Even after the flowering season closes, these flowers and plants appear in the orchard for about a month. The best quality seeds are planted in the garden and the rest are sold for sale in the orchard community.
