Objectives:

The Oklahoma 4-H Public Speaking Contest is held to promote greater interest in public speaking and to provide an opportunity for all 4-H members to develop and improve their public speaking skills.

Age Divisions:

Junior: 3rd grade (and 8 years old) – 5th

Intermediate: 6th-8th grade

High: 9th-12th grade

All ages are based on September 1 of the current 4-H year (2021-22).

Recommended appropriate dress:

Simple casual, including a 4-H T-shirt or dress that fits the theme of the presentation.

Maximum time limits:

Please see the guidelines for specific deadlines for each presentation. 1 point will be deducted for every 30 seconds over or under the time limit.

All set-up, preparation and presentation must be the participant’s sole responsibility.

Categories:

Due to the number of participants, the categories may be combined / divided by the decision of the committee. If a category has 3 entries or less, they will be combined at the discretion of the committee. There will be no assignment changes or increases after May 6.

Awards:

Prizes are awarded to 1st to 5th place individuals in each age group, presentation type, presentation category.

Speech Length:

Juniors: 2-5 minutes

Medium: 5-7 minutes

Seniors: 5-7 minutes

Length of visual presentation:

Beginners: 3-10 minutes

Medium: 5-12 minutes

Seniors: 5-12 minutes

Length of PowerPoint:

Beginners: 3-5 minutes

Medium: 5-7 minutes

Seniors: 5-7 minutes

Celebrity/Character Presentation Length:

Juniors: 2-5 minutes

Medium: 5-7 minutes

Seniors: 5-7 minutes

02 Small animals/pets (birds, cats, dogs, fish, rabbits)

04 Plant/Natural Science (Agronomy, Horticulture, Entomology, Wildlife, Forestry, Environment, Natural Resources, Camping, Shooting Sports, Cycling, Electricity, Woodworking, Petroleum Energy)
