Sculpture in honor of the deceased Beatrice ‘Mike’ Secret installed in the Garden of Eden

The bronze statue of the young girl depicted in a picture book was erected on Saturday in the Garden of Gethsemane for the late Beatrice “Mike” Sequest, a staunch supporter of art and urban parks.

A few years ago, members of the Secrets family arrived in the city to express their desire to sculpt in honor of their mother, who had been involved in many public activities during her lifetime as president of the Nebraska Art Association. Seacrest played an active role in the construction of the Sheldon Art Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the development of folk art in the city.

Family members came to the Parks and Recreation Department to commemorate Seacrest a few years ago in the Garden of Gethsemane.

According to director Lyn Johnson, the department did not hear much until March, when the family called and asked San Diego artist Mary Bookman to create the shape.
