Sign up for the Spring Master Gardener Class on August 15th

Verona – Gardeners who want to return to their communities this fall can take advantage of online training opportunities to develop their skills.

Registration opens August 15 and ends September 15 for the new Gardeners’ Section. These professional volunteers are trained and certified by Mississippi State University Extension Service in Consumer Gardening and Related Areas.

“Participants return to 40 hours of volunteer work within a year of training,” said Jeff Wilson, state extension expert and state coordinator of the Master Planner Program.

This year, all master gardening lessons are online and automated. The current class begins October 1 and closes on November 30.

It costs $ 125 for a certified master gardener who wants to volunteer and provide 40 hours of service.

There is a $ 200 indoor gardening course for those who are not interested in volunteering. The third option is to pay $ 25 per room for selected rooms. These courses are available throughout the year and do not require volunteering.

A community benefits from the local gardeners in many ways. After the first year’s 40-hour community service requirements are met, major gardeners will continue to receive training and at least 20 community service hours a year to maintain their status.

Master gardener’s volunteer work helps the local extension offices reach a wider audience than is possible only by the efforts of extension agents. Volunteers extend the university’s curriculum to the public by providing garden information based on university research and recommendations.

“Master gardener volunteers find personal satisfaction in serving their community, gaining experience in fruits and vegetables, and connecting with their local horticultural community,” Wilson said.
