ST. MARYS – The Thomas Fryer Scholarship is awarded by the McCain County Community Foundation (MCFF) to assist students pursuing a post-secondary 2- or 4-year degree in forestry, horticulture, plant science, general agriculture or animal sciences. Beekeeping or similar sectors. Frere established this fund to support students in their fields of interest throughout their lives.
Freire is a graduate of Penn State University with a BS in Forest Science and an MS in Forest Resources. He has served as a private forestry consultant for 38 years, working primarily with private landowners to achieve short- and long-term forest management objectives. He is a resident of Lafayette Township in McKean County. Since 1995, he has been the owner/operator of Fryer House Greenhouses and Gardens, wholesale and retail annual and herbaceous flowers and garden plants.
Frair: This $1,000 scholarship helps a deserving student cover some of the cost of pursuing their education. He was seriously concerned about how he would meet those financial obligations while pursuing his undergraduate studies and wanted to help another undergraduate student with some of his college expenses. McCain County high school and non-traditional students are eligible to apply. Students are eligible to apply after high school even if they won in the previous year.
Students can apply for the Frair Scholarship on the MCCF website at www.mckeancountyfoundation.org. Go to the “Scholarships/Information for Students” section for details. An applicant creates an account on the online portal and follows the instructions to complete their application.
Students who receive a scholarship award from the Community Foundation may be eligible for matching dollars through PHEAA and the PATH program if they attend PA school.
