According to Paul Gazozola, President of AUSVEG VIC and Victorian Vegetable Grower, the current Labor Program and the Pacific Workers’ Program are a major focus of industry for Victoria growers to fill the growing vacancy in the state’s workforce and extend quarantine.

Victorian gardeners have already planned to have manpower for the harvest season, but the process has been delayed as we wait for the Victorian government to leave.

“Delays in quarantine arrangements are now causing delays, which will continue to put more pressure on the system for a longer period of time. In fact, as we get closer to the high demand that will start in October, this is very important for AUSVEG VIC and its members. Industry wants this quarantine program to be approved immediately.

EY’s recent report on labor demand for fruit and vegetable harvests estimates that there will be a shortage of up to 24,000 workers across the country this year, taking into account the large size of the sector in Victoria.

“This event is important for these workers and their communities. Covide-19 has destroyed the tourism industry in the Pacific Islands, and many Pacific Islanders are engaged in farming in Australia and New Zealand to provide for their families, ”said Mr Gazozola.

The availability of fresh produce is an important step in restoring farmers’ confidence in maintaining the Victorian and Tasmanian highways to meet demand.

“Immediate action is needed by the Victorian government to address the uncertainties of the state’s labor shortage. The move by the Victorian government will ensure the supply of fresh produce to consumers and support local businesses in the region.
