After reviewing all the applications for the 2020 Therapeutic Gifts, NGB has narrowed the list of finalists to three gardening programs. Those gardens –
Children’s Center CFEC
The Children’s Center serves approximately 100 children each month with special needs children. In the children we serve, we see opportunities, not challenges. Our Horticultural Medicine Curriculum brings nature-based programs into and out of our classrooms. Lessons are self-centered and are designed to strengthen memory, develop cognitive skills, build functionality, develop language skills, and raise social standards.
We provide financial assistance, therapeutic gardening assistance, pine needles, soil, home garden kit, adult tools and suitable gardening equipment for students. The money will be used to weed out, pay for poisonous plants and general garden maintenance.
Innova Mountain Vernon Hospital
INOVA Mountain Vernon Hospital is a 67-bed, acute rehabilitation hospital for patients with CVA, brain and spinal cord injuries, and amputations. Over the years, the Therapeutic Recreation Team has incorporated gardening into their services, and the garden has been upgraded from a 10 ‘x12’ garden to a Therapeutic Pavilion, where PT, OT, SLP and TR groups use gardening to work individually. Vera A. Spider Garden
Vera Spider Garden, in partnership with Morrison High School, welcomes high school students with special needs to work in the garden. The students will learn gardening and work skills. They learn to be on time for work, to memorize their equipment, and to be very good at each task. They also learn to water weeds, water, plant, and harvest. Other groups come and use the garden for recreation and social activities. Each month they teach a new topic of gardening and have a brief discussion. After the discussion, they would do gardening, including planting, painting, or making gifts. They learn about plants and use the plants harvested from the garden. Crafts help them practice their fingers and improve fine motor skills as well as make decisions and create something to share.
